Earn Up to 15 Additional Professional Development Hours at No Cost

Participants in AFRE’s 2008 summer academies can earn additional professional development hours when they apply their new knowledge and skills during the 2008-2009 academic year.

To qualify, you must attend at least two sessions in the AZventure Academy OR one entire Best Practices Academy. Then you will determine what you would like to model or integrate (content and/or skills) in your classroom planning and/or instruction, and submit the required documents to AFRE for final review and feedback.

Options are as follows:

  • Option A – 4.5 hours: Enhance a current lesson plan by using new content or applying one new instructional practice learned. Then submit the original and revised plans to AFRE.
  • Option B – 9 hours: Design and implement a new lesson by using new content or one or more instructional practices learned. Submit lesson plans, evidence of implementation and resulting student learning, and your personal reflection on the experience.
  • Option C – 15 hours: Design and implement a new unit by using new content and one or more instructional practices learned. Reflect on the implementation of your unit, and how it has influenced both your students and yourself. Submit copies of the complete unit and your personal reflection on this experience to AFRE.

After your summer academy and before September 1, notify Kathy Mullin (Kathy.Mullin@afre.org) of your desire to pursue additional professional development hours. At that time, you will be given additional details.

ASU Graduate Credit
Participants have the option of earning one to three graduate education credits from Arizona State University’s College of Education, depending on the successful completion of the specified events and fulfillment of the related follow-up requirements.

To take advantage of this credit offer, participants must register and pay the appropriate ASU fee ($363 per credit, plus additional $65 application fee). In addition to attending the AFRE events, they must complete the follow-up requirement (an application-oriented project appropriate to their professional setting).

Registration for ASU coursework MUST be done through the AFRE office because of special processing requirements at ASU.

Contact the AFRE office at (602) 266-4417 for specific course offerings and related details.
