An Inconvenient Waste: What Is
the Price of “Convenience”? — A Project Learning Tree (PLT)
Workshop
7.5 Professional Development Hours
8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
November 8, 2008 – Phoenix
Designed for teachers in grades K–12
What “conveniences” have we come to expect in our daily
lives and what do they cost us and Planet Earth? Explore the life
cycle of goods and resources we use daily — often without
giving a thought to their origin or ultimate disposal. Compare
nature’s recycling with our human methods as we learn about our
ecological footprint. Leave this experience with increased common
“cents” about improving student assessment in your classroom.
Outcomes and Indicators
By participating in this workshop, you will:
- Examine the life cycle of a natural resource by
following a product from extraction through disposal and
potential re-use.
- Identify waste streams (e.g., water, solid waste) and
how to minimize their impact(s) by creating a flow chart
depicting the life cycle of one commonly-used household item.
- Analyze how individual choices impact natural resources
we use by examining the economics involved throughout the life
cycle of a product.
- Understand that humans create waste but can effectively
minimize waste streams by creating a natural resource usage plan
for their classroom and/or personal lives.
Content Focus: Waste and waste management,
economics, natural resources, life cycle assessment, worldwide
economics
Research-Based Practices Modeled and/or
Targeted: Assessment (Stiggins and Reeves),
